Our journey inside Il Cantiere in Cantina at Tenuta Genevrina continues with an update on the progress of the first phase of construction. After discussing the design phase and the launch of the project, we now delve into the heart of the new Tenuta Genevrina’s foundation—a key step that combines controlled demolition, sustainable materials and cutting-edge construction techniques.
Demolition: the past makes way for the future
The first phase of work began with the demolition of the existing warehouse to make room for the future underground aging cellar and a new agricultural building. The construction site, which became operational in mid-December, saw the installation of a large crane anchored to the Belvento hill with a solid reinforced concrete base designed to remain underground for centuries.
After removing recoverable metal materials, the concrete block walls were taken down by an excavator equipped with hydraulic shears, while the reinforced concrete floor was removed to begin excavation for the future aging cellar. Every step was carefully planned to minimize environmental impact and maximize material recovery, in line with Tenuta Genevrina’s commitment to sustainability.
Foundations: precision and innovation
The foundations of the agricultural building were constructed with meticulous engineering precision. The operations, which began in early 2025, benefited from favorable weather conditions. During excavation, the softer soil gave way to blue tuff, a compact and resistant rock that required specialized techniques for removal without compromising the stability of the surrounding area.
One of the key objectives of this phase was the total reuse of excavation and demolition materials. The removed soil and inert debris were relocated to the future parking area, reducing the environmental footprint of the construction site: nothing in, nothing out! This circular approach transforms every leftover material into a resource, preventing waste and reducing heavy traffic in the surrounding areas.
After excavation, a layer of gravel was spread to level the surface and ensure proper drainage. A first layer of “cleaning” concrete was then poured to create a solid base for subsequent construction phases. The choice of high-performance materials has enhanced the structure’s durability and improved its energy efficiency.
Tons of steel and concrete: pouring the foundations
On this base, a team of carpenters placed the reinforcement cages made of tons of interwoven metal bars, essential for ensuring structural stability. Next, a convoy of concrete mixers reached Belvento Hill to pour the foundations, completing this critical phase of the project. The entire operation was carried out with extreme precision to ensure the highest level of safety and durability for the new structure.
From foundations to structure: wood and steel for sustainable architecture
With the foundations in place, the project now rises in height. The underground aging cellar will be enclosed by four reinforced concrete walls, above which an innovative wood-and-steel structure will emerge. Wood, chosen for its sustainability and insulating properties, blends perfectly with steel, which provides strength and structural lightness. This combination of materials helps reduce environmental impact while harmonizing with the natural landscape of the Tenuta. The use of laminated wood allows for modern and functional architectural forms while respecting the region’s aesthetic.
Shaping the future: the agricultural building
As construction progresses, the agricultural building is beginning to take shape, featuring wooden surfaces designed to house spaces dedicated to wine storage and aging. The mixed-material architecture ensures energy efficiency and a low environmental impact while maintaining harmony with the surrounding landscape. The design includes large glass surfaces, which will allow optimal natural lighting, further improving the overall energy efficiency of the structure.
Il Cantiere in Cantina at Tenuta Genevrina: an ever-evolving project
“Il Cantiere in Cantina” project at Tenuta Genevrina is not just architectural transformation, but a dynamic journey that engages the public at every stage of the project. For this reason, on March 30th, Tenuta Genevrina will host the second event dedicated to this extraordinary evolution. It will be an opportunity to closely explore the project, immerse yourself in the estate’s atmosphere, and taste the exceptional wines from our production.
This special event will allow wine enthusiasts and curious visitors to discover details of the construction process, hear about the project’s design choices, and get a preview of how the new Tenuta Genevrina will take shape. Each visit will be enriched with a selection of our best wines, accompanied by detailed explanations of the production process and the unique characteristics of each label.
